Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth extractions are a routine procedure to remove one or more of your four wisdom teeth, which are the last set of molars that normally appear in late teens or early adulthood. These teeth can often cause problems because they may not have enough room to grow in properly, leading to issues like pain, infection, or damage to other teeth.

Why Remove Them?

Wisdom teeth can become impacted, meaning they grow at an angle instead of straight through the gum line. This can cause discomfort, lead to uneven tooth eruption, or result in only a partial emergence of the tooth. When a wisdom tooth only partially breaks through the gum, it can create a flap of tissue that traps food and bacteria, increasing the risk of infection called pericoronitis. Removing problematic wisdom teeth can help prevent these complications.

The Extraction Process

During a wisdom teeth extraction, we begin by numbing the area with a local anesthetic, and for some patients, sedation or general anesthesia may be preferred to ensure complete comfort. The gum tissue around the tooth is carefully opened to access the tooth, which is then gently loosened and removed. If the tooth is tightly impacted, it may be divided into smaller pieces to facilitate removal. After the extraction, dissolvable stitches are often used to close the area, promoting quick and smooth healing.

Post-Procedure Care

After your surgery, it’s important to rest and allow time for recovery. Due to the effects of anesthesia, you’ll need someone to drive you home. Some bleeding is normal immediately after the procedure, and we will provide gauze to help manage this. If bleeding persists for more than 24 hours, please contact our office. To aid healing, avoid lying flat; instead, prop your head up with a pillow. We’ll provide pain relief instructions and may prescribe medication to help with any discomfort. Applying an ice pack can also reduce swelling and pain.

Recovery Tips

For a smooth recovery, stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soups for a few days. Avoid using straws, as the suction can disrupt healing, and refrain from smoking, which can also hinder the recovery process. If you experience prolonged pain, excessive bleeding, or any concerns about your healing, please reach out to us for a follow-up.
